Being lead is a curious thing. One can be lead to life or lead to death. The picture above is a young Chinese drug trafficer a short time before she was shot in the head by an agent of the Chinese government in 1991.

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man [woman], but in the end it leads to death.

Tao Jing is a physical example of a spiritual reality. When we follow the way that feels right to us as individuals it can and does lead to death. When we have ourselves, our feelings, thoughts and personal moral values as our guiding principles in life we can often lead ourselves to die on a daily basis. Before I became a Christian and embraced the universal truth of the bible, I followed my own relative “truth” that I believed was, “true for me”. I saw drugs as an answer to many of my problems. Perhaps Tao Jing felt the same way or maybe she was coerced. My suppliers also saw my trade as an answer to their financial problem. I had a financially sustainable drug habit getting wasted on Cannabis and sometimes alcohol. It began to eat away at my academics and my mind as long months turned into short years. I had a sense of impending doom. I saw the lives of others around me spiral downward. I got involved in situations where I felt unsafe. I needed a new morality badly. When I saw the teaching of the bible regarding sin and repentance I was blown away at the simplicity of the answers and angered that all the religion I had been around for decades growing up had failed to show me basic biblical morals. When I studied the Bible I realised that I could be led by the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:16-26 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

My life led by the Spirit began with the sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:17). I studied the Bible with true followers of Jesus. It had a very specific and different morality to mine. Once committed to this path I have kept in step with the Spirit over 26 years with the continuing help of the Scriptures and my brothers. The Galatians 5 passage above shows that keeping in step with the Spirit involves defining sin clearly and repenting of sin as part of life in the Spirit. Being led by the Spirit is being led toward fruit of righteousness and away from sin. For many years previous to my convertion I was part of a faith community that called itself christian but I was willingly in a lot of sin and gladly led into more sin by my friends. It took a sword to free my bonds.

Ephesians 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

It is indeed possible to triumph over the flesh! I gave up smoking cigarettes and Cannabis, getting drunk and sleeping around as well as swearing and other habitual sins like masterbation all on the same day. I began a new life led by the Spirit.

Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Life in the spirit is part of a teaching process as can be seen from the scripture here. I had to be taught a new morality. It had to be explained. It had to be modelled to be believable.

Ezekiel 36:27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

The Spirit of God that I was given in my water baptism moves me to follow the bible. Any time I think or feel led to do something good that is connected with a command of God or end up in a situation that prompts those experiences it is a prompting from God’s Spirit. Being led by the Spirit is not a warm fuzzy feeling. It is not a worship experience. It is a prompt to action. I can allow myself to be moved or I can resist. The Spirit of God does not force me. It is installed seamlessly into my heart. It gives me every chance of success. Once I follow the commands of God to repent and be baptised I receive the Spirit as a deposit and a gift and a seal of my redemption. If I choose to keep in step I will overcome. I want to be led by the Spirit of God my whole life. Glory!
