For a Modern Church to be “filled with the spirit”,  a prerequisite would be that all its members have been baptised in water for the forgiveness of sins and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God is the most exciting symbiotic relationship known to man! To seek God ‘His way’ is a challenge that leads to this major benefit. The God of the universe literally moves into your heart. He takes up residence.

Galatians 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “abba, Father.”

Jesus himself foretold this special blessing.

John 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

How does this happen exactly?

1 John 3:24 Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Jesus said this indwelling comes when we obey his commands. He is very clear that this indwelling is as a result of obedience to specific commands of God. We can see clearly what these specific commands are in Acts chapter two. After the Holy Spirit is made available by being poured out on the day of Pentecost (see First Principals Holy Spirit Baptism study) the Apostle Peter gave these specific instructions for how to receive the Holy Spirit in-dwelling.

Acts 2:38-39 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

The Holy Spirit indwelling is a seal, a mark and a guarantee.

Ephesians 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

It is living inside us and has to do with our resurrection.

Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

It turns or bodies into literal temples. We become a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

It lives inside us and helps us share and keep our faith.

2 Timothy 1:14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit lives inside a Christian. And this is a very distinctly different and unique receiving of the Holy Spirit made available after the outpouring on the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit enters into a person when they are baptised in water after having repented of their sins (Acts 2:38-39) .
